Introducing Dorothy & Alice: Under the Rainbow

My most ambitious project yet!

Did you ever read those Choose Your Own Adventure books when you were younger? Well, my Pick-A-Path Series is modeled similarly except it is geared towards a more mature reader. Nothing graphic, but not for the faint of heart.

A few years ago an editor I was working with suggested I try making a CYOA style book. It seemed a little intimidating at the time, but when I saw there was a small but growing niche market for “Gamebooks“ like this, I was intrigued. I decided to test the waters frst and experimented with giving the reader a choice of Endings for my series, ‘I dreamt I was a Red Knight’s Squire.’ If you liked the story but didn’t like the canonical ending, I gave the choice of 8 more endings, each with a different flavor to ensure there would be at least one for everybody.

Flash forward to the Summer of 2025. I needed to take a break before starting my 4th draft of Red Knight, so I took a few days/weeks to outline an idea I had. Basically, I wanted to tap into Public Domain works and try to make a few of them my own. I’ve always been partial to the Wizard of Oz and Alice in Wonderland, so I thought it would be cool to pair them up after their original stories had ended and send them on an adventure together. But I wanted to sex them up, make them more gritty and comical and provide a fun experience for the reader. So I decided to make it a Pick-A-Path story!

But I took things to the next level. I created an entire shared universe of classic literary crossovers. On one hand, I could include other well known works, such as Peter Pan. But on the other, I could give readers exposure to older pieces of literature they may not know about, such as, ‘The King of Elfland’s Daughter,’ by Lord Dunsany.

I knew I needed to be different with the artwork, so after talking with Magaly Abarca about it, we decided to experiment. She’d do some minimalist art sketches and I’d teach myself graphic design. The results have been awesome! Magaly had previously collaborated with me on Giving the Devil Her Due. She also did concept art for Just Some Guy and Isekai Mansion. So it’s been great having her back in the fold again.

In fact, I had so much fun working on this that I decided to release two supplemental material books. Annotated editions of both ‘The Wonderful Wizard of Oz’ by L. Frank Baum and ‘Alice in Wonderland’ by Lewis Carroll. They include the original stories as well as red inked, inline annotations by me. So you can get my perspective on these great pieces of classic literature. I even designed the covers!

In addition to these annotated books, I’ll also be releasing a series of FREE short stories, right here on this website. The purpose of these will be to provide extra context and character development for Dorothy & Alice. But also just to give them some fun side excursions! The first of these stories will be posted shortly after this announcement has been released. So make sure to check back here to read it!

As for the main books, the first in this series, Under the Rainbow, should release sometime this Summer. (2026 at the time of this writing) Here’s a synopsis below…

A pick-a-path story is an interactive form of storytelling where you, the reader, make the decisions for the protagonists. But unlike the decision based books of your youth, Dorothy & Alice is intended for a more mature audience. Each choice will have dire consequences. Some may advance the story while others could very well end it!

Don’t like the Outcome of a certain Decision? Just turn back to one of the designated points to continue where you left off!

In Under the Rainbow, Dorothy Gale has been cursed to never smile again after an encounter with a strange robot that has been kidnapping story book characters and absorbing their otherwise happy endings.

But once teaming up with Alice of Wonderland fame, the two Heroines embark on an adventure through literary classics in order to find out who’s behind the insanity and get vengeance for Dorothy!

Help them navigate the perilous literary multiverse! Will you steer them towards success? Or lead them to a grim demise?
